Keep WordPress Plugins Up To Date
WordPress is an open source blogging platform that is available for free to the general public. Over the years, it has become one of the most popular software on the Internet. Many business owners and individuals use WordPress to power their blogs and websites.
One of the main reasons why this software is so popular is because it is very versatile. It allows third party developers to create plugins that can be easily added to the platform. For instance, if you want more traffic, you can download an install an SEO plugin that will configure your site to become more search engine friendly.
Plugins are great to have, but there is a drawback. The older versions of WordPress require you to perform a series of steps to install the plugin.
First, you have to download the plugin. This is usually available in ZIP (compressed) format. You then need to unzip (uncompress) the file on your local hard drive. Once the file has been unzipped, you need to fire up your FTP software and upload the files to your server. Only then can you activate the plugin. If there is an update available for the plugin, you have to go through the same process again. For this reason, many webmasters choose to leave their plugins as it is (without updates).
A plugin that is not updated means that the webmaster is not able to enjoy the latest features. In addition, if there are bugs in the plugins, the bugs are not fixed. In some cases (very rare but it does happen), plugins may even contain code that compromises the security of the website. In this case, the plugins must be patched immediately. As it is inconvenient to do an update for the plugins, many webmasters choose to ignore these drawbacks.
Fortunately, the latest version of WordPress allow webmasters to upgrade their plugins to the latest version without having to go through the usual lengthy process.
To perform an update, login to your WordPress control panel. Then navigate to the plugins management page. If an update is available, a prompt will appear above the plugin. Click on the link and you will be asked if you wish to perform an update automatically. Performing an update regularly means that the new plugin is downloaded and then uncompressed and installed in the plugins folder. This happens automatically without any intervention on your part. The automatic upgrade even activate the new plugin on your behalf. Once the newest version has been installed, you may proceed to configure the plugin.
To enjoy this new automatic update feature, make sure you have the latest version of WordPress installed. You can install the most recent WordPress by using Fantastico. Fantastico is a script installation feature that comes with Cpanel hosting. Check with your web host to see if Fantastico is available if you own a Cpanel hosting account. If you don’t have any hosting, consider signing up for an account.
Remember to go to Linux hosting with Cpanel control panel. Fantastico should be included in the hosting package. Within minutes, you can setup your WordPress website with the latest plugins.
