Interactive Blogs Are the Most Successful – Part 1

The key element to the Web 2.0 craze is the interaction that takes place on a dynamic website. Previous to Web 2.0 sites the websites were static allowing no interaction between visitor and web master. Research is showing that the more interactive blogs are the most successful.

If you want a highly interactive website or web page you can start a Facebook page or a free blog with Blogger, WordPress or another blogging platform. There are inherit problems with these free blog options since you do not own the domain name but that is a topic for another article. What I want to cover in this article are the ways that you can make your blog more interactive and the way that I do this and recommend that you do it is by using purchasing your own domain name and installing WordPress, a free blogging software that is easy to use and has many plugins that will add lots of interaction making your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

Here is a list of items to consider adding to your blog that will rank you up there with the most interactive blogs.

Commenting on articles

People can read your articles and benefit but when they can comment on your article it is even better. On top of that there are plugins for WordPress that will allow the commentator to receive and email when someone replies to their comment. This is fun for the people and attracts traffic. Traffic and comments will add value to your site that is good for SEO with Google and other search engines. Something that will attract even more people to comment on your blog is if you allow their name to have a hyperlink and make that hyperlink a ‘do follow’ link. Making the links ‘do follow’ requires a little editing of a file in your WordPress files (instructions found on my blog). This ‘do follow’ may attract spammers if you have a good page rank (PR) but you can moderate the comments and not allow spammers to post. You can also add a captcha to your comment posting so a bot cannot enter comments. In the end the traffic and comments may give you more value with Google. Surely this will make your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

Social Networking

There is a great WordPress plugin called ‘Socialize’ and installing this on your WordPress will add a pretty row of social network icons like Facebook, Twitter, Delicious and more. This is standard and allows people to easily share your post on their Facebook feed for example. When I watch something good on Hulu there are social network icons below the video that allows me to post the video link right to my Facebook feed allowing me to share this video with hundreds or thousands of people. This makes your blog one the top interactive blogs but there is another benefit called viral marketing. A virus spreads to other cells in the body by infecting one cell. Viral marketing is similar that one person reads an article like the one you are reading and then shares it with their friends or colleagues. The result is your blog gets more traffic and becomes one of the most interactive blogs.

A Review Of Auto Hyperlink URL Plugin For WordPress Blogs

So, you?ve been writing on your Microsoft Word and you have become accustomed to the program automatically converting the URLs you type into clickable links.? You?ve been posting in several forums and you?ve become used to the system creating hyperlinks for the web addresses you share without having to onerously type those and BBcodes.? You?ve been posting ads on popular classifieds on the web, and you have grown confident that the email address you type will immediately be hyperlinked and such can result to an increased response rate.

?

Why, then, do you have to take a step backwards when it comes to your WordPress blog?

?

Why should WordPress, the industry standard when it comes to blogging platforms, have to make life harder for you by requiring HTML encoding just to create correct hyperlinks for the email addresses URLs you type?

?

If you?ve been maintaining a WordPress blog for a significant period of time, you?ll know what we?re talking about.

?

-????????? When a URL is succeeded by a period, a parentheses or another character necessary for the correctness of the sentence structure, WordPress will also add that character to the hyperlink it will generate, hence causing visitors to be taken to an invalid URL.

?

-????????? When a term is typed that includes the character ?@? in the middle, WordPress mistakes it for an email address and automatically hyperlinks the same even if it corresponds to an invalid email destination like joey@work or Johnny@play.

?

-????????? When a URL is too long, WordPress still displays it, which often results in distorted pages that makes viewing less convenient and enjoyable.

Indeed, WordPress? hyperlinking system is flawed.

?

This is where plugins come in.

?

The best plugin that remedies all the shortcomings of WordPress? default hyperlinks is Auto Hyperlink URL.? This clever little add-on has become an absolute necessity for WordPress bloggers.

?

Aside from correcting all the problems of WordPress? default hyperlinking system which we have enumerated above, the Auto Hyperlink URL allows blog operators to:

?

-????????? Truncate URLs after they reach a certain number of characters;

?

-????????? Include words that will precede and succeed truncated URLs;

?

-????????? Allow text URLs to show only the hostname;

?

-????????? Open a new window when a URL is clicked so that visitors won?t have to leave the blog page;

?

-????????? Make the blog page ?nofollow? to prevent the proliferation of spam on the comments section;

?

-????????? Read class B domain references (links that are not preceded by ?www?).

Installing the Auto Hyperlink URL WordPress plugin is just as easy as installing other plugins.? Simply download the Auto Hyperlink URL plugin and upload the same to your wp-content/plugins folder.? Thereafter, install the Auto Hyperlink URL from your WordPress Plugin menu in the admin panel.

?

In this day and age when linking has taken central stage in the race for top search engine positions and when read rate is determined by interlinking blog posts within the same blog, the Auto Hyperlink URL WordPress plugin has become a mandatory addition to any WordPress blog.

We recommend that you download this Plugin and place it straight on your Blog in order to get the best results. Visit http://www.myeasyonlinepay.com/blogging-tools for a comprehensive selection of Plugins on the internet today.

Search Engine Optimization for Blogs

Whether it?s a corporate blog, a news-type blog, or even a personal blog, optimizing your blog for the search engines is a must. There are some simple changes that you can make to WordPress and Moveable Type that will make your blog more search engine friendly and make the search engines beg for more (more post and content, that is!).

Optimizing a blog is just like optimizing any other website. The content and pages (posts) must be unique, they must be search engine friendly, and it needs links from other websites. If it?s a new blog, then you first need to make sure the blog software you?re using is set up so that it takes advantage of all of the possible optimization features. Then, announce it to the world, work on getting some links to it, and start making posts.

WordPress Optimization

If you?re using WordPress for your blog software, it?s important to make sure that your site is search engine friendly, meaning that it can easily be spidered by the search engine spiders. Just like optimizing a website, it?s important to have good title tags and meta tags. Keep in mind that blog software usually uses the title of your post as the title tag, so include keywords in your titles as much as possible. It?s important to set up your blog?s software so that the URLs don?t contain a lot of variables. Instead, use URLs that include the post title or post name in them. For example, if you?re using WordPress you?ll need to set the permalinks so that it uses %postname% in the URL. You can also set up a specific category for the post archives, and you might consider using a keyword that?s related to your blog instead of the default, which is typically the word ?archive?. Fintan Darragh of www.dech.co.uk has a great blog post called ?Ultimate WordPress SEO Tips? (http://www.dech.co.uk/2005/11/ultimate-WordPress-seo-tips/). Mr. Darragh talks about permalink optimization and says, ?The goal: stick more keywords up into the URL and remove the faff which nobody uses, to make the URL search engine and people attractive. Having keywords in your URL is an absolute must, especially when it?s as easy as WordPress makes it.? He also goes on to talk about getting rid of useless tags like the month, day, and year, as well as one important detail: whatever you do stick with the site structure you choose?otherwise you might end up with a lot of useless links to your site. Other tips that Mr. Darragh mentions are optimizing your page titles and your post titles–and installing a few plugins that are useful such as the ?Related Posts Plugin? and the ?Technorati Tag Generator?.

There are several other places where you can get specific tips about setting up WordPress in a search engine friendly manner, including: * SEO at Aleeya Dot Net – http://www.aleeya.net/category/WordPress/seo/
* The Best WordPress SEO Possible – http://WordPress.org/support/topic/49168
* Search Engine Optimization for WordPress – http://codex.WordPress.org/Search_Engine_Optimization_for_WordPress
* Search Engine Optimization for Blogs – http://www.blog-maniac.com/blog-seo.htm
* DYI Search Engine Optimization – http://lorelle.WordPress.com/2006/01/15/dyi-search-engine-optimization/ One of the best tutorials out there is one called ?DYI Search Engine Optimization? by Lorelle VanFossen. Specifically, Lorelle (lorelle.WordPress.com) has some great tips, including how to optimize your code, develop strong intrasite links, write with strong keyword usage, use categories and tags, and how to use ping services. Lorelle says that ?the goal is to help search engine crawlers move through your website collecting information to be stored in the search engine?s database. The key to your blog?s data making it successfully into a search engine?s database is to: 1) Make sure there are no road blocks in the path of a search engine crawler.
2) Make sure the crawler can move through your blog, examining all your web pages.
3) Provide adequate keywords and key phrases which clearly help categorize your content.
4) Provide clearly labeled tags and categories recognized by tagging service crawlers and many search engines today.
5) Take advantage of pinging services.? There are several WordPress Plugins available that will help you take advantage of internal linking (like the Related Posts Plugin) which will link to other posts in your blog that are on the same topic.

Other plugins that might be helpful are plugins that automatically generate a Google Sitemap file as well as plugins that help you categorize the site such as the WordPress Subdomain Plugin (http://www.webguerrilla.com/WordPress-subdomain-plugin/).

Movable Type Optimization
If you?re using Movable Type for your blog software, then it?s also important to make sure that your site is search engine friendly and can be spidered by the search engine spiders. Just like optimizing a website, it?s important to have good title tags and meta tags. Keep in mind that blog software usually uses the title of your post as the title tag, so include keywords in your titles as much as possible. Miles Evans (http://www.webpronews.com/expertarticles/expertarticles/wpn-62-20060310Movable TypeSEO.html) says that ?Movable Type is optimized quite well out of the box, but there are a few quick tricks to easily providing the spiders with some dynamic content.? He goes on to say that you need to optimize your template. ?For my main home page and category index pages I hardcode most of my meta data. Your meta tags will be at the top of the template within the tag. You can get fancy on your index pages but I cannot really see why. Optimize these two templates by hand for whatever keywords you are targeting site wide.? Mr. Evans also has another article titled, ?Best Movable Type Plugins? (http://www.webpronews.com/expertarticles/expertarticles/wpn-62-20060310BestMovable TypePlugins.html) that talks about his favorite plugins that help him get great search engine rankings. His favorite Movable Type Plugins for SEO are Dashify, MTPaginate, MT Blogroll, MT InlineEditor, MT-Textile, BigPAPI, as well as Ajaxify (a set of plugins that adds several ajax/javascript widgets into the Movable Type interface), CheckLinks, FormatList v1.0, and Better File Uploader for uploading files. Nicholas Carvan (http://www.nicholascaravan.com) has a great article about Movable Type optimization called ?Optimizing your Movable Type blog for Google? (http://www.nicholascarvan.com/blog/optimizing_your_Movable Type_blog_for_google.html). In it he talks about PageRank (and how it relates to your internal linking on your blog), having keywords in your URL (which is important for all blog optimization) and blogrolling. He defines the term blogrolling very well, saying, ?Blogrolling: Inbound links are gold, but in Google’s eyes, not all links are equal. In particular, Google isn’t wild about links contained within JavaScript – apparently they can index them, but that doesn’t mean they always want to.?

Once you?ve set up and configured your blog?s software, it?s important to make sure that you leave it alone?if you change your page URLs then any links that you?ve received from other bloggers may not be valid anymore. If you need to change your site?s structure (perhaps you?ve been blogging already and wish to use the tips from this article to optimize your blog), then you might want to take a look at the Objection Redirection WordPress Plugin(http://WordPress-plugins.biggnuts.com/objection-redirection-WordPress-plugin/) if you?re using WordPress. The Objection Redirection Plugin gives you a simple interface to redirect users (and search engine bots) to the proper page, especially if you?ve changed your site?s structure.

Start Blogging
The best thing you can do is to start blogging. Go ahead and post to your heart?s content and write, write, write about your topic. The more content you can provide the better?and it seems as if adding content on a regular basis really helps, as well. Feel free to link out to other blog posts that are related to the topic you?re writing about. For example, before you publish a post, go on over to your favorite blog search engine and find another recent post on the same subject?and link to the post. Linking out to other bloggers will get their attention, and hopefully they?ll end up linking to you as well. If other bloggers have trackbacks turned on then their blog will link back to your post. Some trackbacks are moderated, so it might take some time before your link shows up on the other blog. And some bloggers have trackbacks turned off, so a link back to your site might take some manual intervention. Categorize your posts as much as possible, and feel free to add categories as you blog?it will help the internal linking structure of your site, and help the search engines and users find on-topic posts.

Promoting Your Blog
Whenever you make a post in your blog, your blog software will attempt to ping certain sites to let them know that you just updated your blog. There are many blog ping services out there, including Ping-O-Matic and Pingoat. Your blog software can be configured to ping sites automatically, and I?ve posted a list for WordPress of ping services on by blog (http://www.corporatewebsitemarketing.info/cwm/WordPress-ping-list). If your blog is new or you would like to get some more links, you can submit your blog to blog directories as well as other sites that will list your blog (don?t forget to submit to DMOZ.org, Yahoo! Directory, and the Best of the Web Blog Directory). About.com has a great article about promoting a

Interactive Blogs Are The Most Successful: Part 3

This will conclude our 3 part series of interactive blogs. In this third part we will look at some internal plugins or widgets that will help the visitor to your site navigate to helpful information with greater ease and as a result should make your site, on a whole, more productive.

RSS Feed
If you don’t have an RSS feed you are missing an extremely valuable tool. The RSS feed is another form of viral marketing as mentioned in part 1 of this series. Visitors to your site can subscribe to this feed and will receive updates as you add content to your blog. I personally use Feedburner provided by Google and there is a WordPress plugin for that. You will have to get an account with Google and then setting up the feed is mostly automatic. You will be able to have Google add Adsense to your feed earning you some extra money. This will provide further interaction.

Newsletter Subscription
A newsletter can be set up to send the subscribers an email each time you add new content to your website. Unlike the RSS Feed you can send your subscribers a newsletter at will. This was you can send them information that is not posted on your website and can post information on your blog that will not be sent to the subscribers. A well ordered newsletter that is enjoyable and informative and not just sales pitches, one after another will build relationships built on trust and respect and will be worth it’s weight in gold for years to come. Therefore, a newsletter is a part of the most interactive blogs.

Recent Posts and Comments
One the WordPress dashboard in the widgets section there are recent comments and recent posts and placing these on your sidebars will create fantastic on page navigation for your visitors. If they come to your site through an article on “Cleaning your dog’s teeth” and they see another recent post on “How to groom your dog and not get bit” they are likely to continue browsing your site. Recent comments can also catch their eye and lead them to read more and meander around your site stumbling over more and yet greater information.

Related Posts
There is a WordPress plugin for this option and it will pull posts that are related by tags into a list like the recent posts. I know that I would like to link to all the other relevant posts from one so that people can keep reading, learning and growing. This plugin takes care of that for you by pulling all related content into a list for the visitor. I just love it when you can automate all these great systems to help your readers.

When you use all the tools that we have covered in the 3-part series you will surely have one of the most interactive blogs! If you missed parts 1 or 2 of this short series look for them.

Look for Part 1 or 2 on Bill’s Blog if you missed them! Since 99′ Bill Wynne has successfully used the Internet to effectively convey information for profit and not-for-profit. Recently, Bill created a blog to share his experiences in Internet Marketing. His blog offers free tools and articles like Interactive Blogs: the Most Successful.

This is part-1 of a 3-part series so look for it.

Interactive Blogs Are The Most Successful: Part 2

Here we are with part two in the series of how to make your blog one of the most interactive blogs on the Internet. In part one we looked at the value of allowing people to comment on your articles, we considered allowing people to be emailed when someone replies to a commentators comment and we looked at making the URL in the name field a ‘do follow’ link. We also considered a plugin for social networks like Facebook and Twitter. One of the best WordPress plugins for this is ‘Socialize’ or ‘AddtoAny’.

Now lets cover a few more items that will add more interaction to your blog.

TweetMeMe
Have you seen an icon on a post that says “Tweet” and tells you how many Tweets a blog post has? This is another great WordPress plugin called TweetMeMe. This will allow people to Tweet your post on their Twitter account. This is interactive for them and more viral marketing for you.

Comment Rating
This is yet another WordPress plugin that will put a little green thumbs up hand and a little red thumbs down hand on your comments. This will allow people to simply click the green or red hand to applaud or deject a comment left by another. People just love to comment on other people’s comments, don’t they? This is a great asset to making your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

Community
There is a WordPress plugin for joining a kind of site community. I tried this and honestly I did not like it but I am sure it is very appropriate for someone’s blog. People do love to feel like they are part of a private club.

Forum
If you are real serious about a particular topic and plan to be very focused you may want to consider adding a forum to your blog. This can draw lots of traffic and become a place where people will come to share and grow together. These can become like little communities and I am part of forums where we know each other and it is a great experience. Both communities and forums will creative interactive blogs.

Surveys/Polls
Like I said previously, people like to comment and be heard. You can create an enjoyable and profitable exercise for people to do with surveys and/or polls. If you had a site that was heavily involved in Mac products now would be the perfect time to take a poll about the new Ipad. In a few weeks you could take a survey from the people that bought the Ipad and see how they liked it. This is another value tool to make your blog one of the most interactive blogs.

We are going to have one more part to this series and in it we will include some items that are not necessarily interactive but will help make the navigation more efficient and the productivity of your site much more valuable.
